Sponsored by Pinnacle Housing Group, this project sought to create affordable housing for the elderly community in miami. Situated on a site of an existing synagogue complex, the building used a simplistic building typology to respect the existing buildings on the site. The open center of the project allows for an open area for interaction between the tenants, seeking to create an ideal living facility for the elderly population in Miami.

Traditionally, the residential lot of Savannah consists of a large residential house with a small carriage house in the back, joined by a garden/courtyard. This typical plan was adapted into the distribution of the project’s program. One large volume was created along the main street to house the most important and public parts of the program (art galleries, studios, etc.). Three smaller volumes, which resemble small carriage houses, where placed in the left of the site. These volumes became the dormitories for the students. This distribution allows for a clear division between public and private, but also creates a series of mediating spaces (courtyards, gardens, etc.), that allow for collective interaction at a scholarly level as well as a leisurely scale.

The Guantanamo Bay Research Center is part of a larger masterplan which aims to explore different ideas on how Guantanamo can transition from a military base into a city of research and study for the world. The studio bases its work under the assumption that Guantanamo base is in the process of transitioning from a US military base to a civilian jurisdiction, ultimately the military base property being transferred to Cuba under specific guidelines and regulations that preserve the area as a model city.
